How to Manage a Remote Team with PC Monitoring Tools

Remote team management is challenging as communication may be hampered. This is because nobody can have control over what employees do during working hours. When the workplace is not a single office building, a manager cannot simply walk up to an employee’s desk to review progress and inquire about the reasons for any issues that have arisen. Therefore, it is crucial to determine how to effectively manage a team that works away from the office without becoming overly obsessive about the employees’ work and non-work activities.

PC monitoring tools can help in this situation to get an idea of how the employees are spending their time if the manager uses this information to identify ways to improve the company’s performance. However, there are also some other methods that do not rely on analyzing what employees do during working hours.

How To Help Employees With Their Day

Working from home implies that employees can have a larger number of distractions, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the work required by the employer. Excessive social media use, participating in non-work-related conversations, and being interrupted by colleagues are just some examples of such disruptions.

Using PC monitoring software, an employer can detect when employees are wasting time and reduce interruptions at the workplace. For example, if a person working for an IT company spends too much time at the computer on social media posts and applications, it can be inferred that their regular work hours are being hampered by social media.

Give Employees More Independence

Few people like to report to their manager every half an hour. Not only does it disrupt their workflow, but it also puts unnecessary pressure on the employee and creates a culture of mistrust between the management and the staff.

Activity monitoring software prevents the constant need for communication by providing the manager with reports on the employees’ progress at intervals decided by the team. This way, the workers have more autonomy and can deliver better results without the manager’s constant presence and control.

It is important to establish what information is being collected and who can see it. The monitoring software can become an intrusive instrument if not applied ethically – a vital consideration for establishing positive relationships between the management and the staff.

Use Data to Identify Problems Early

Often, the reason for poor performance is not a worker’s attitude but a complex set of circumstances unrelated to the task. A slow computer, an unstable internet connection, a difficult period in one’s life, or an unclear brief from the manager can all impact the employees’ performance.

Modern productivity analytics tools available in monitoring software allow managers to determine whether the slowdowns are connected or if a specific group of employees is affected strongly than others.

Analyzing this data can help management find the root cause of the issue to devise a plan to minimize the negative impact on the team. It is always best to consult with the staff to resolve difficulties, as the activity reports will only display the work rate and not the reasons for it.

Make Remote Work Easier for Everyone

The manager’s primary responsibility in the case of remote work is to eliminate the barriers preventing the staff from completing tasks smoothly. Monitoring software is a helpful tool that can aid the management in addressing and alleviating the issues. However, it is not a substitute for honest communication and consideration of the employees’ concerns.

Use the information from the software to develop a plan for improving team’s performance. Focusing on results instead of the process can help the management encourage the staff to implement solutions themselves.
